Msgr. Barreiro will be speaking on "the Catholic as a pro-life leader"
at 11.45am this coming Saturday the 8th of September in the RDS in Dublin.
Msgr. Ignacio Barreiro-Carámbula was born on October 22nd 1947 in
Montevideo, Uruguay. After obtaining a doctorate in Law in Montevideo, he
joined the foreign service of his country. From 1978 to 1983 he was a
member of the delegation of Uruguay to the U.N. In 1983 he entered the
Dunwoody Seminary in New York and was ordained a priest by Cardinal John
O’Connor on November 14th 1987, in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York city.
In New York at the same time that he worked in a parish, he was involved
with the Pro-Life apostolate. In 1991 he entered the University of the Holy
Cross in Rome, obtaining his license in 1993 and his doctorate in Theology
in 1997 with a dissertation on The Experience of God and of the Faith in
God according to St. Thomas Aquinas. He is fluent in Spanish, English,
French and Italian.
In September 1998 Msgr. Barreiro was appointed Director of the HLI Rome
Office, which was inaugurated on November of that same year, with the
blessings of Pope John Paul II. This office has several responsibilities:
- To strengthen the relations of HLI with the Holy See. It provides a
steady flow of information to the Roman offices that are responsible for
life and family issues.
- To assist the Central Office, branches and affiliates with technical information.
- To increase the knowledge and commitment on life issues of the priests,
religious, seminarians and lay persons that are doing their studies at
Pontifical Universities in Rome. To assist those students, this office has
a library of around five thousand volumes and many complete sets of academic
magazines. With the assistance of this office a significant number of
students have completed their academic work.
- To conduct pro-life apostolate in Italy. This office has been involved
in many conferences and meetings spreading the Gospel of Life in Italy.
For many years Msgr. Barreiro has been offering the traditional liturgy
of the Church, in accordance with the rite of St. Pius V. He sees that
there is a clear relationship between the respect and adoration that are
due to Our Eucharistic Lord and our commitment to protect and promote life
and family.
Msgr. Barreiro has published many articles and booklets both in English
and Italian on life and family topics, theological, liturgical and historical
issues. On March 26th 2004 he was appointed Chaplain of His Holiness Pope
John Paul II.
